Since removing fluoride from water is very difficult, especially at an industrial scale, it is released into the Siuslaw River in the treated effluent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/safewaterflorence.org\/swf-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/water-treatment-plant-01-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14 alignleft size-medium\" srcset=\"https:\/\/safewaterflorence.org\/swf-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/water-treatment-plant-01-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/safewaterflorence.org\/swf-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/water-treatment-plant-01-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/safewaterflorence.org\/swf-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/water-treatment-plant-01-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/safewaterflorence.org\/swf-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/water-treatment-plant-01-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/safewaterflorence.org\/swf-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/water-treatment-plant-01-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>City water used for irrigation spreads the fluoridation chemical into the soil, vegetation, and stormwater runoff.<\/p>\n<p>In response to an Oregon Public Records Act (ORPA) request dated June 2025, the City of Florence Public Works Department manager stated that the department purchases 88 50-pound bags (4400 pounds) of sodium fluoride per year for the community water fluoridation program. (<a href=\"https:\/\/safewaterflorence.org\/swf-wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/OPRA_req25-110_cropped.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to view the OPRA request response<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>If 99% of fluoridation chemicals are used for purposes other than drinking and going into the sewer or stormwater systems, then <strong>around 4356 pounds of this pollutant are ending up in the river and local\u00a0 environment each year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Fluoride is a serious environmental pollutant.
